My Summer

It has been too long since I posted on my blog. The summer zoomed by and the school year is about to start. Here is the news since the last time I posted: Since July 1 I am now the only staff member of the Information Center. It has gone amazingly well. I will get a part-time person for 10 or so hours a week starting next week. This will be a great help because I need someone to take care of the clerical work. The books and videos to be shelved are adding up fast. It has been interesting working more face-to-face with patrons in the Information Center. The past few weeks saw some frantic requests for videos for professional development. Of course, a few videos in particular have been perpetually checked out and have waiting lists. Quite a lot of books and videos checked out during the summer.  I’m adding new books to the collection a little at a time because I don’t have a huge book budget.

I took this past week off since I don’t know when I will be able to take time off again in the near future. Friday was a furlough day and with Labor Day coming up it made for a nice long vacay. Next week  will be a day short but jam-packed: a staff meeting Tuesday afternoon, an all day workshop I’m presenting with a colleague Thursday and a few meetings in between. I will bet that September will go by as fast as July and August!

Technology-wise I bought a new smart phone, the HTC Evo. I love this thing! I finally have a true smart phone and it is very wise! When I’m home watching tv I have to play games on it. I only have free games but my favorites are Darts, Clink and Word Drop. Action Potato is fun for a short time and I’ve just downloaded the beta version of Angry Birds and it is driving me crazy!  I’m on level 8 and I can’t beat it. Dang!

I have the HTC Evo and I lurve it!

I finally got the HTC Evo 4G on Sunday. I went to a Sprint store and they were out and told me that the other two Sprint stores in the area were out. I went to the non-company Sprint store in Rochester and they had two left. I slapped some money down so that they would hold one for a day. Officially, I can upgrade my phone in August but I was told that sometimes Sprint allows you to upgrade on the 18th of the month prior. My guy was good because he did sweet-talk Sprint so that I could get my phone on the 18th. And, to boot, I was the only customer in the store at 12:30 on a Sunday so I had his undivided attention. After a call, money changing hands, a data transfer and a few quick lessons I was on my way.

I went to Bravo for lunch and my eggplant parmesan got cold while I played with the Evo. The apps are abundant and I’ve only added freebies so far. The email, Twitter, Facebook, etc. all work fast and easy-peasy.

The voice search is f-u-n! I had to turn the music down on my computer to get a spelling in FreeDictionary but then it worked beautifully. I’ve tested the voice memo too.

Love, Love, LURVE all of it! I may go into a real tizzy when we get 4G in the area!

I am hoping to upgrade to the HTC EVO in July. Apparently I can upgrade on July 18 but that is a Sunday. If the store if not open that day I will have to go on Monday the 19th! I am so anxious to get this phone. It seems to do everything!!!

Researching new cell phones

I currently use a Palm Centro as my cell phone and I really like it. As a long time Mac user I was hoping to get an iPhone but too many barriers are preventing that from happening. The big two are that I’m on Sprint with my family and Sprint works in my windowless office at MPOW. Those are two good reasons.

I will be able to upgrade my phone in August and I’ve had my mind set on the Palm Pre ever since it was released. Now I’m thinking of going another way. My sister was at a Sprint store to check on when I can upgrade. When she told the rep I was interested in the Pre he suggested that I wait until summer to get the HTC Evo 4G. So, the research began!

I started reading reviews and the Evo is a monster… and I mean that in a good way! The tech sites lucky enough to preview the phone L-O-V-E it!

The Evo has two cameras – one in the front and one in the back, video, touch screen, larger footprint than the iPhone, etc., etc., etc.

I am SO hoping that the Evo is as great in person as it is in the short video previews I’ve seen on the Web. I will be able to see one in a Sprint store in mid-June and then August won’t get here soon enough!!!

I may go for the Palm Pre

Since I cannot have an iPhone (Sprint contract too new, etc) I may go for the Palm Pre when it is released this summer. I love the Palm Centro but I would like an interactive phone. Although the Pre probably won’t be an iPhone killer it will be very nice indeed. The reviews are quite good and I’m looking forward to checking one out. I hear it may come out in June. Palm had better get a move on!

More on Palm Centro

I have had my Palm Centro smartphone since the end of last week and I love it. I was afraid that the screen would be too small for me when using the calendar, etc. It isn’t too small. I can also get the day, week and month at a glance views that I like. I color-code events so the month at a glance is very helpful.

When someone calls the prompt is clear with big answer, hangup and speakerphone buttons. I’ve already added some photos of family members. The 1.3 megapixel camera is pretty good and the camcorder isn’t bad either. I’ve taken some test videos of Fritz and they came out pretty well.

When I hot synced the first time everything went to my Centro. Even things I forgot I had that I must have deleted but were still in my applications on my computer. I will probably buy an expansion card to add songs and store photos and videos. So, final result for the Palm Centro: A+!

I’m ready for a smartphone

I’ve been using Palm handhelds for years. The few different models I’ve used have all been reliable, easy to use and very beneficial. While many people have gone to the converged device side I’ve stuck to the single devices. Well, I’m ready to switch! I am hoping to purchase a Palm Centro if it works out well. What I mean by that is that I work in an office with no windows. For the past five years since I’ve been in this location I have not been able to get reception on my cell phone. Then I switched to Sprint and my phone starting working in my office. So, if the Centro works in my office (my niece will test it because she has a Centro) I will be switching!

My book is now available!
