A “good” cell phone number!

I was in a Sprint store last week because some apps were not successfully installing on my Evo. The young Sprint guy asked if I had tried pulling the battery and I had. He looked something up on the computer and then asked if I had tried pulling the battery and the SD disk and then powering down the Evo. I had not. This worked!

The interesting thing about being at the Sprint store – besides the fact that I can, once again, play Angry Birds thanks to the fix on my Evo – is that when asked my cell phone number both the Sprint guy and young guy #2 who was a customer waiting for a phone repair both responded that it was a really good number. I agreed and indicated that I hoped to have it forever.

I got a kick when two young guys into technology got geeked out over a good string of numbers. I can relate but it was still kind of funny.

I have the HTC Evo and I lurve it!

I finally got the HTC Evo 4G on Sunday. I went to a Sprint store and they were out and told me that the other two Sprint stores in the area were out. I went to the non-company Sprint store in Rochester and they had two left. I slapped some money down so that they would hold one for a day. Officially, I can upgrade my phone in August but I was told that sometimes Sprint allows you to upgrade on the 18th of the month prior. My guy was good because he did sweet-talk Sprint so that I could get my phone on the 18th. And, to boot, I was the only customer in the store at 12:30 on a Sunday so I had his undivided attention. After a call, money changing hands, a data transfer and a few quick lessons I was on my way.

I went to Bravo for lunch and my eggplant parmesan got cold while I played with the Evo. The apps are abundant and I’ve only added freebies so far. The email, Twitter, Facebook, etc. all work fast and easy-peasy.

The voice search is f-u-n! I had to turn the music down on my computer to get a spelling in FreeDictionary but then it worked beautifully. I’ve tested the voice memo too.

Love, Love, LURVE all of it! I may go into a real tizzy when we get 4G in the area!

Researching new cell phones

I currently use a Palm Centro as my cell phone and I really like it. As a long time Mac user I was hoping to get an iPhone but too many barriers are preventing that from happening. The big two are that I’m on Sprint with my family and Sprint works in my windowless office at MPOW. Those are two good reasons.

I will be able to upgrade my phone in August and I’ve had my mind set on the Palm Pre ever since it was released. Now I’m thinking of going another way. My sister was at a Sprint store to check on when I can upgrade. When she told the rep I was interested in the Pre he suggested that I wait until summer to get the HTC Evo 4G. So, the research began!

I started reading reviews and the Evo is a monster… and I mean that in a good way! The tech sites lucky enough to preview the phone L-O-V-E it!

The Evo has two cameras – one in the front and one in the back, video, touch screen, larger footprint than the iPhone, etc., etc., etc.

I am SO hoping that the Evo is as great in person as it is in the short video previews I’ve seen on the Web. I will be able to see one in a Sprint store in mid-June and then August won’t get here soon enough!!!

I’m ready for a smartphone

I’ve been using Palm handhelds for years. The few different models I’ve used have all been reliable, easy to use and very beneficial. While many people have gone to the converged device side I’ve stuck to the single devices. Well, I’m ready to switch! I am hoping to purchase a Palm Centro if it works out well. What I mean by that is that I work in an office with no windows. For the past five years since I’ve been in this location I have not been able to get reception on my cell phone. Then I switched to Sprint and my phone starting working in my office. So, if the Centro works in my office (my niece will test it because she has a Centro) I will be switching!

Technology is in the air!

This is a gadget round-up post. I’ve heard some technology news of interest in the past few weeks and I want to pass on some observations. Apple has announced the MacBook Air. You may have seen the TV commercials – this extremely lightweight and thin laptop is taken out of a 10″ x 13″ envelope. Very nice! Apple has also announced that you can rent movies from iTunes. “Library Titles” are $2.99 and new releases are $3.99. You can download and play the movies on your iPod, iPhone or computer. You can also download directly from AppleTV. If anyone has AppleTV I would love to hear your comments about this service.

I use a Palm TX for my calendar, contacts, notes, dictionary, etc. Many people at my place of work use Palms daily like I do. Lately, two people have had Palm problems and I think it’s because their Palms are quite old and very well-used. I had to call the time of death on one of the Palms and that person is ordering a new one. The other problem was fixed by a simple soft re-set. Because of the surge in convergent device sales Palm has not produced a new “stand-alone” since the TX. I’m not ready to make the change to having the phone and handheld in one device. I like my small cell phone.

Over the holidays I switched from Cingular to Sprint. My family is now all-Sprint. My new phone is a Samsung flip phone with a red face. I am having great luck with the new service and I love the phone. I would like to download The Man From U.N.C.L.E. theme song to add to my phone as a ringer (I loved the show as a kid and even had a MFUNCLE attache’ case). I found out that if you buy the ringer from Sprint you pay for the bandwidth use every time it rings. You can buy the Internet service but it’s $15 per phone even if you are on a family plan. You can, however, add a song from a CD or iTunes and then you are not paying the Internet fees. The song is available on iTunes but I then have to figure out how to get it on my phone. I don’t think a data cable came with the phone but there must be one available for this use.

New Mobile Phone and Service

Today I switched my mobile phone service. I now have Sprint. I got the free Samsung flip phone that was available with our family service. I love the new phone and will learn more about it in the next couple of days as I play with it. It is lighter and slimmer than my old phone which, by the way, was lighter and slimmer than my previous phone. Anyway, I am looking forward to the new phone and new service and I may just have to download the theme song from The Man From U.N.C.L.E. to use as a ring!

My book is now available!
